The Hour of Code is next week! Below are some resources and a video to get your classes excited about coding.
What is Zearn Math? from Zearn on Vimeo.
What is Zearn? Some teachers around our district are using Zearn in their classrooms. Watch this video to see what it is all about.
The students in Mrs. Walker's class have been building ancient villages with their Minecraft accounts. This student describes how she created the village and significance of each part of her village.
Third grade students around the district are continuing to search their campuses for lines, texture and symmetry. I am amazed by the wonderful photographs they have taken. Here are a few examples.
This week I began using the app YouTube Capture. It honestly took me two minutes to complete the above videos. If you are looking to create videos with your class, YouTube Capture is definitely a great place to start.
Before we went on break, I started a three part lesson, with the third grade class at Olivet Charter School, on photography. We began the lesson by introducing the students to lines, texture and symmetry. Following that lesson we showed the students how to take and edit pictures on the iPads. Then it was time to let them out and explore. They were to take 12 pictures and find things that had lines, texture and symmetry. Some students were lucky enough to capture photos that had all three. I was amazed at how wonderful the photos came out. The last part of the lesson was for the students to edit their pictures and choose three photos to make a collage. Next steps...posting the photos on their blogs. Can't wait to teach this lesson to another class.
Seesaw is a free iPad app through which students can create a portfolio to document the things they have learned. Students can add artifacts to their portfolios by taking pictures of their work , by writing about what they've learned, or by shooting a short video to record something they have learned.
When I first learned about Seesaw, I thought it was an app for just primary grades. I have since learned that Seesaw is a great app for all grades and is an excellent way for students to create a digital portfolio. The other great thing about Seesaw is that it can be used on both the chromebooks and iPads. There are more functions on the iPads, but the students can still access Seesaw from the chromebooks. Padlet is a new way to allow your students to interact with each other. It is a virtual wall that allows students to easily express their thoughts with one another. Here is an example of Padlet from a sixth grade class.
This week I blogged with teachers. I love learning alongside with the teachers. We are all learning at our own pace.
